Tips For Drawing Pumpkins
Pumpkins are super easy to draw. They're essentially just a tall oval shape with some more arches to either side. That's how simple it is to create just a regular pumpkin. And you only need a regular pencil to draw it.
When sketching these pumpkins, you can also add some color. I chose not to, as I wanted to keep these drawings as simple as possible. But you absolutely can. To add some color to your pumpkin drawings, I highly recommend outlining them first with a black brush pen, like this Tombow Fudenosuke pen that I love. Then, you can color them with markers. You can use any you like, but my favorites are the Ohuhu Honolulu markers, which I use in every drawing I make.
Also, one thing to keep in mind when coloring your pumpkins: you don't need to make them all orange. Some pumpkins are more of a light beige or green color. Have some fun with what colors you use. It'll make coloring them a lot more exciting.
Now, let's look at those pumpkin drawing ideas!
Simple Pumpkin Drawing Ideas
1. Regular Pumpkin
A regular pumpkin is one of the easiest fall drawing ideas you can draw. They are made up of just a vertical oval with more arches attached to each side, and a dried stem on top. These are super fun just to doodle in your sketchbook.
To make mine look less static, I added some interruptions in the lines. This also kinda makes it look like there are some light reflections on it even though I did not add any shading.
2. Tall Pumpkin
Pumpkins don't all have the standard pumpkin shape. You can make them any shape you like. The first variation is this long or tall pumpkin. It's essentially the same shape as the regular pumpkin but elongated. You can make it extremely tall, kinda like I've done here, or you can just make it slightly taller.
3. Flat Pumpkin
Another shape variation you can make is the flat pumpkin. Unlike the elongated pumpkin in the previous idea, this one is squished down until it got super wide and flat.
To make your pumpkin look flat, you just make the starting oval wider, more towards a circle, and then you add wider arches on the sides. You can get super extreme with it and make it super flat and wide, but I kept it sort of balanced and made it half as high as a regular one.
4. Wobbly Pumpkin
Now, you don't have to use perfect ovals to draw your pumpkins. You can make them wobbly as I did with this one. Instead of adding all ovals, you just add a wobbly in the sides of the ovals. Or if you're lazy like me, you only sketch the top and bottom parts of the ovals and only add the wobbliness to the outer edge.
Another thing that came to mind when drawing this, and I already touched on it earlier. If you want to color your pumpkin drawings, you don't need to make them all the standard orange color. This one, for example, I want to color a light green color. I think that would look pretty good. Better than orange.
5. Weirdly Shaped Pumpkin
I love weirdly shaped plants, and pumpkins. Some just grow weirdly or get stuck between something when they grow. I once saw a pumpkin growing in between the mesh of a fence. No clue how you would get it out.
I made mine just a little misshapen. This does mean that you don't need to use the oval technique to draw the perfect pumpkin. I did make the overall shape kinda the same as the regular pumpkin, but the sections are all weird shapes and a little wrinkly. And especially on the right, I added some additional almost beetroot-shaped sections that look like they had a hard time.
6. Old & Wrinkly Pumpkin
This might be my favorite type of pumpkin I made for these drawing ideas: the old and wrinkled pumpkin. It has a similar overall shape to the wobbly pumpkin, but instead of super smooth and clean lines, I scribbled a bit when sketching the lines, creating this serrated and uneven edge all over the pumpkin. This gives it an old and dried look, which I really like. I also made the stem on the top more dried out and shrunken.
7. Butternut Squash Pumpkin
Butternut Squashes have a distinct shape, almost bottle-like. And so, in Dutch, we call this a bottle pumpkin.
Unlike the tall pumpkin that has a uniform shape, this butternut squash is wider at the bottom and skinnier at the top. Almost pear-shaped, but then a little longer. This pumpkin also does not have the deep grooves the regular pumpkins have. Instead, they are just colored lines on a smooth surface.
8. Three Different Sizes Of Pumpkins
Want to create a little scene of pumpkins? Drawing three differently sized regular pumpkins instantly creates a fun fall scene. And it's still pretty easy to make.
If you want to add more, you can, but make sure to add some variation in size if you don't want to create some dystopian piece of art. Add some small pumpkins next to a really big one, or some medium-sized ones on the outside.
9. Three Different Types Of Pumpkins
What is even more fun is creating a composition of different types of pumpkins. In this drawing, I drew a regular pumpkin, a butternut squash, and a flat pumpkin. You don't need to directly copy this. You can make any combination you want, in any order you like. Creating your own little pumpkin collection is a super fun drawing exercise.

10. Pumpkin With A Cute Face
Pumpkins are great objects to experiment with faces and facial expressions. Since they're not humans, you can make them look odd and imperfect and they would still look good.
For example, I added a super cute face on this pumpkin. It's not something you might think of when thinking of a pumpkin with a face. But the fun thing is, when drawing pumpkins, you don't need to stick to a fixed set of rules. Have some fun and create some weird or super cute drawings.
To make this pumpkin look this cute, I simply added some round eyes with a 3-shaped mouth in between and 3 small blush lines on both cheeks. That's all.
11. Smirking Pumpkin
Next, I thought the wobbly pumpkin would be perfect for a devious smirk. It makes me think of GoodTimesWithScar's Minecraft skin.
Instead of giving this pumpkin a regular jack-o'-lantern mouth, I made it into a smirk with the right side pointing up, with a short line at the end, and the skin would fold (if pumpkins had human skin). And for the eyes, I drew slightly tilted lines with triangular pupils.
I think this one turned out quite well. It also makes me think of the LEGO minifigure face. There is one that looks exactly like this.
12. Surprised Pumpkin
Another not-so-standard facial expression of a jack-o'-lantern is a surprised look. Since this is a drawing, I didn't need to take into account what would be cut out and left floating, so I added these perfectly (ish) round eyes with floating round pupils towards the inner edge. I added a cute triangle nose and a tall oval mouth. No teeth.
No clue what I just did, but this pumpkin is very surprised to say the least.
13. Pumpkin With A Cat Sitting Next To It
When creating a cute pumpkin drawing, you don't need to make the pumpkin look cute. You can also add something cute next to it, like this kitty cat.

Fall Pumpkin Drawing Ideas
Pumpkins are also really fun fall decorations. My mom always puts a pumpkin outside our front door and will keep it there until it's either all dried or all turned into sludge.
14. Pumpkin With A Crow Perched On Top
A pumpkin with a simple crow on top is a perfect example for a fall harvest-themed drawing or as a Halloween decoration. A crow and a pumpkin seem to be the perfect companions for each other.
To add some extra fun to the drawing, I made my crow stand directly on top of the dried stem of the pumpkin.
15. Pumpkin With A Spider On It
What's another commonly associated animal with fall? Spiders, of course! I've already created this spider drawing guide, which was pretty fun, but for these pumpkin drawing ideas, I had to add a pumpkin with a spider crawling on it.
The spider is made up of two sections. One is its head, where the legs attach, and one is the spider's belly, which is the back part.
If you want to make it extra spooky, you can add some spider webs around the pumpkin. Spider webs are super easy to draw. In this guide, I show you exactly how to draw them with just a few simple lines.
16. Pumpkin Surrounded By Mushrooms
Pumpkins and mushrooms are another perfect fall-themed combination. I drew a regular, maybe slightly bigger pumpkin in the middle and surrounded it with the classic mushroom types. I added some smaller ones, some medium ones, some with a more pointed cap, some with a round cap, and I drew the biggest ones a little from underneath, showing the gills of the mushroom.
I made sure to add lots of variation, making it more natural-looking and dynamic. Plus, it's super fun to try and come up with variations yourself.
17. Pumpkin Overgrown With Vines
Adding long twisting vines to your pumpkin drawing creates a beautiful natural look. Just as if it were overgrown by the stems and leaves of the pumpkin plant that this pumpkin grew on.
The key to making this look good and natural is adding some thicker stems or vines, some small and curly vines that are for grabbing onto things, and some leaves every now and then. With this in mind, you can create a beautiful overgrown look to your pumpkin drawing.
18. Pumpkin With Wildflowers Growing Next To It
Another way to create a beautiful natural look to your pumpkin drawing is to simply add some wildflowers next to it. This creates a cozy and peaceful autumn scene.
You can just add a few as I did, or you can create your own flower meadow with pumpkins scattered throughout.

19. Scarecrow With A Pumpkin Head
For these pumpkin drawing ideas, I thought it would be fun to also include this little scarecrow drawing with a pumpkin head. I don't like the regular burlap sack head too much, so I changed it out for a jack-o'-lantern. How cool does this scarecrow look now?!

Jack-o'-Lantern Drawing Ideas
20. Classic Jack-O'-Lantern
As I said earlier, pumpkins are great for practicing facial expressions. For the classic jack-o'-lantern, I drew this standard angry face with upside-down triangle eyes, a triangle nose, and a wide smile with some sharp teeth.

21. Happy Jack-O'-Lantern
Of course, you don't need to stick to the traditional jack-o'-lantern. You can make yours happy and smiling.
To carve a happy face into your jack-o'-lantern drawings, you simply draw triangular eyes that point upwards, a triangle nose, and make a wide smile with squared-off teeth instead of sharp pointy ones.
22. Winking Jack-O'-Lantern
You can also experiment with other facial expressions like winking. This one looks very similar to the happy pumpkin, but with one eye closed to show that he's winking.
23. Sleepy Jack-O'-Lantern
To make your jack-o'-lantern drawing look sleepy, you draw both eyes almost closed as the eyelids get heavy. And to make the mouth look sleepy too, I drew it less wide and almost like a flat wavy shape with just two teeth. And by just changing that, your pumpkin now looks very sleepy.
24. Scared Jack-O'-Lantern
You can also make your pumpkin scared as if it saw a skeleton jump out in front of it while walking on the sidewalk.
For this one, I used more rounded shapes. I made the eyes big and round on the top, and on the bottom, I added a slight curve upwards. This already makes your jack-o'-lantern look scared. Then, I added eyebrows above the eyes that curve downwards, which enhances his scared look. And to finish it off, I added an almost screaming mouth.
25. Screaming Jack-O'-Lantern
Talking about screaming, I thought it would be fun to draw a screaming pumpkin too. It's not something you see people carve into their pumpkins often.
To make my little screaming pumpkin drawing, I drew a big round mouth with four sharp teeth. Then I added the nose above, which is higher on the face as the screaming mouth takes up so much space. And next to the nose, I added the eyes, which are a bit squished because that's what happens when you scream. Try it.
26. Angry Jack-O'-Lantern
I already showed you the classic jack-o'-lantern, but I wanted to try and make an even more angry one.
To make this pumpkin look super angry, I added a lot of teeth to the mouth, I made the nose have this little upward point at the bottom, and I made the eyes half circles with the top pointing down towards the nose. Especially the diagonal top of the eyes makes this jack-o'-lantern drawing look super angry.
27. Vampire Jack-O'-Lantern
Lastly, I wanted to turn a pumpkin into a vampire because I like vampires.
To make it look vampiric, the main thing I did was give it big vampire fangs. And to finish the look, I also added the classic pointed vampire ears.

Fun & Creative Pumpkin Drawing Ideas
Lastly, I also wanted to add some creative pumpkin drawing ideas you might not think of straight away.
28. Jack-O'-Lantern Wearing A Witch Hat
Let's start with this evil jack-o'-lantern with a witch hat. Adding a witch hat instantly makes your jack-o'-lantern look more Halloweeny, plus it's super fun to decorate your pumpkin drawings.
29. Jack-O'Lantern Wearing A Cowboy Hat
Instead of a witch hat, you can also turn your pumpkin into a cowboy by drawing a cowboy hat on its head. Personally, I prefer this one over the witch hat one as this one makes less sense.
30. Jack-O'Lantern Wearing A Leaf Hat
Instead of adding an actual hat, you could also add a more natural-looking hat-like thing, like this big leaf.
Adding a leaf hat to your jack-o'-lantern makes it look a little bit goofy, as if it couldn't find a hat to wear so it just picked this big leaf off the ground.
31. Jack-O'-Lantern With Boots
Instead of adding something on top of your pumpkin, you could also add something below it, like a pair of legs and some boots. It does look really silly, even with his serious face.
Now that I look at this drawing again, I think this would work really well with the cowboy hat.
32. Hippie Jack-O'-Lantern With Sunglasses
Adding some hippie sunglasses to your pumpkin is also a fun way to decorate it. For this one, I did change the smile to look more content with the world, if that makes sense. I gave it just a little smile.
With these glasses and the little smile, it does remind me of a sea turtle for some reason?
33. Jack-O'-Lantern With Flying Bats
Lastly, to get back to the Halloween spirit, I drew a pumpkin with some bats flying around it. This makes for a simple and classic Halloween drawing idea.
