18 Fall (Autumn) Drawing Ideas (Simple & Cute)

This post is all about easy fall things to draw.

simple fall drawing ideas: mushrooms, acorns, sleeping fox, and more

Looking for some fun and cozy fall & autumn things to draw? In this post, you'll find some simple fall drawing ideas to add some autumn-themed sketches to your sketchbook or just to doodle.

I just wanted to let you know that this post contains affiliate links, and any purchases made through these links will result in a small commission for me and won't cost you anything extra.

These fall drawings are super simple, and you only need a regular graphite pencil to draw them.

However, if you want your fall doodles to look extra clean, you can outline them with a black fineliner. And if you want to add those red, orange, and yellow fall colors, you can use alcohol based markers like the Ohuhu Honolulu markers (or any marker you already have) to color your sketches in. This will make your drawings feel more fall-themed.

These fall drawing ideas are meant to be simple and fun. You don't need to worry about getting them perfect. They are just simple drawings. Plus, imperfections give your drawings character and prove you're human. So don't stress too much if the proportions are off or if your lines don't look perfectly smooth.

Now, let's get started with the first fall drawing idea.

Simple Fall Drawing Ideas

1. Acorns

simple pencil doodle of some acorns

Around the start of fall, the oak trees let their acorns go. There are so many that they cover the streets. I always like to look out my window at all the ducks eating the acorns like there is no tomorrow.

Acorns have a pretty easy shape. They're mostly round or more elongated, with a cap on the end. This makes them perfect for beginners. The cap also allows you to experiment with some texturing. I made the texture of my acorn caps just a simple curved cross-hatch pattern.

2. Cozy Sweater

a simple pencil drawing of a comfy sweater

When the weather starts to get cooler, I love to wear sweaters. I like mine a little too big, which makes them super comfy.

Sweaters are a great way to practice the fabric folds. In my drawing, there are a few on the ends of the sleeves, on the bottom edge, and in the armpits. I also added these ribbed strips along the edges of the sweater. If you're up for a little challenge, you could turn yours into a hoodie with a pouch on the front.

3. Leaves Blowing In The Wind

simple pencil doodle of some leaves blowing in the wind

When I think of fall, my mind goes straight to the leaves falling from the trees and blowing in the wind. The leaves always tend to collect at our front door, and when the wind blows, it creates these little swirls of dancing leaves.

For this drawing, I wanted to keep it super simple. I drew a few different kinds of leaves (oak, maple, and the rest I don't know the names of...), and then I added these swirls and lines to show the motion of the wind.

You could create a beautiful pattern from this. I think that would look really nice.

4. Pumpkins

Pumpkins are also a classic fall drawing object. They come in many sizes and shapes. Some are more round, like the ones I drew, and some are more bottle-shaped. They can be super tiny or huge. Did you know that the biggest pumpkin ever produced weighs 2819 lbs (1279 kg) and has a circumference of over 21 ft (6.5 meters)?! Try drawing one that big!

5. Boots In A Puddle

Another classic fall-themed drawing subject is some boots standing in a puddle. This immediately creates an autumn atmosphere.

Drawing the water isn't all that complicated. It can just be as simple as a blob shape with some lines following the edges around the boots. That already looks pretty convincing for a simple pencil drawing.

6. Maple Leaf

When the leaves start falling off the trees, I always try to find the biggest one and take it home to dry. I love the serrated edges and the lobes of the maple leaves, plus they turn a beautiful deep red.

To draw a maple leaf, it's easiest to start with the stem, then add the lobes with the ridges, and lastly the veins.

Cute Fall Drawing Ideas

7. Sleeping Fox

super simple pencil drawing of a cute sleeping fox

When brainstorming about what to draw for this fall drawing ideas post, I immediately thought of a cute sleeping fox. Their curled-up bodies make them a lot easier to draw as they hide their paws to keep them warm with their big, fluffy tail.

8. Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are also super cute animals, despite the sharp spikes all over their body. They look super cute waddling about as they run away from our dog.

Hedgehogs actually have a pretty easy shape. It's just a slightly flattened circle with a pointy nose, some little paws, and spikes on its back.

9. Squirrel Collecting Acorns

Squirrels spend a lot of their fall time gathering food for the winter. I drew my squirrel collecting some acorns.

The biggest part of what makes a squirrel a squirrel is their big bushy tail. If you get that right, it'll likely look like a squirrel.

10. Owl Sitting On A Branch

You might disagree with me, but I think owls are super cute. They do always look angry, but that doesn't make them less cute.

Fall Nature Drawing Ideas

11. Pile Of Leaves

simple pencil drawing of a pile of leaves

You know what I don't get? I don't get why people hate leaves so much. When fall starts, all these leaf disposal things appear, and they're full before you can blink. Why are people so obsessed with throwing all the leaves away? Leaves are great for the soil and the plants, plus they cover all the mud and make it actually look like fall.

However, to honor all the people who hate leaves on their lawn, I included this little pile of leaves. When I first thought of adding this to the list, I didn't know how to draw it in a simple way. What I did was first mark out the shape and size of the pile. Then draw the leaves that aren't covered by any other leaves. Next, I sketched leaves that were partly covered. Lastly, I added a few lines in between the gaps that were still there.

This turned out pretty well if I say so myself.

12. Mushrooms

wimple drawing of multiple types of mushrooms

I LOVE mushrooms. They might be my favorite part of fall. They come in so many weird shapes and colors. I especially like the tiny purple ones that are hidden in between the brown leaves. I also really like the yellow ones that pop up like villages on the side of fallen trees.

Mushrooms can have narrow stems or the classic wide ones that are round and wider at the bottom. The hats can also look however you like. I drew a mix of different mushrooms: the classic red one with white dots (if I were to color it), some small ones, and this taller one that turns into black ink-like slush.

13. Wind-Swept Tree

simple pencil drawing of a tree bending from the wind

I also really enjoy a good autumn storm. I love watching the trees bend from the wind and seeing tons of leaves fly through the air. It always looks so dramatic, and yet the trees stay firm in the ground. At least most of them. For some reason, I also like freshly fallen trees, especially if they block a road or a trail.

For this wind-swept tree drawing, I drew a beautiful old maple tree (kinda like this one from a step-by-step guide I made) and made it bend dramatically to the right and lose some leaves in the process.

14. Deer

simple pencil drawing of a deer looking straight at you with big antlers

Deer are iconic woodland animals that fit perfectly in any fall landscape. When walking through the forests, I always like to spot deer, but they always seem to spot me first and stare at me. I had to include a deer doing just that in this fall things to draw post.

Deer can be difficult to draw, but if you start with a big square the size of the body and the legs, and then add the head and the large antlers, it gets a lot easier.

Fall Scenes Drawing Ideas

15. Scarecrow

simple pencil drawing of a scarecrow

Here in the Netherlands, I don't see that many scarecrows. Mostly, it's just a big trash bag or some CDs on a stick. But I still wanted to include them in this autumn drawings list as they are associated with the harvest season and pumpkin patches.

You can draw one standing by itself, or you could add it to the pumpkins from earlier and create a pumpkin patch.

Want to know how to draw a scarecrow? I've created a step-by-step drawing guide just for that.

16. Raindrops On A Window

simple pencil drawing of a window covered in raindrops

Raindrops on a window instantly create a cozy mood. I love it when it rains, and I am inside. The drops make such a nice and relaxing sound.

To make this drawing more interesting and personal, you could add your view out of the window behind the drops.

17. Rainy Street

simple cartoon-style pencil drawing of a rainy street

A rainy street makes a beautiful atmospheric fall drawing. And it doesn't have to be complex or difficult. I just drew 2 converging lines for the road, sketched some boxy houses next to the sidewalks, added diagonal lines for the rain, and drew some reflection lines and puddles on the ground.

18. Cozy Forest Cabin

simple pencil sketch of a woodland cabin

A small cozy cabin surrounded by some big trees is one of the most iconic fall scenes you can imagine. I drew a classic block hut among some huge pine trees with a path winding to the front porch.

If you want to make your fall cabin scene complete, you can add a little creek flowing next to the house and draw some smoky lines above the chimney to show that someone actually lives there.

This looks like such a nice place to run away to and spend the fall there.
