How To Draw An Audi RS6 - Precise Step-By-Step Guide

In this car drawing tutorial, I will show you how to draw an Audi RS6.

I've divided each part into simple steps so you can easily follow along and create your own realistic Audi RS6 drawing.

Let's get started!

How To Draw An Audi RS6?

To create a realistic drawing of an Audi RS6, I first searched for a reference photo that I liked.

After that, I sketched the outline of the RS6 using the grid method.

Next, I colored the car with alcohol markers, starting with the black and gray areas before moving on to the main body of the car.

Finally, I added details with colored pencils and highlights using a Posca paint marker.

Step 1: Find A Reference Photo Of An Audi RS6 You Like

When drawing a realistic car, using a reference photo is a must.

I found this photo I really like on unsplash.com:

Step 2: Choose What Drawing Supplies You're Going To Use

To make this drawing, I used Ohuhu Honolulu markers in the colors Colorless Blender (0), Neutral Grey 03 (CG030), Neutral Grey 3 (NG03), Neutral Grey 07 (CG070), Neutral Grey 6 (NG06), Neutral Grey 7 (NG07), Black (120), Shadow Pink (RV270), Pastel Rose (R9), Cadmium Red (R160), Rose Red (R6), and Old Red (R7). I also used the black and white Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils.

And to add white highlights, I used a white Posca PC-3M paint marker.

I made this drawing on A4-sized Canson Illustration Manga paper.

Step 3: Sketch The Basic Outline Of The Audi RS6

To outline the Audi RS6, I like to use a sketching technique known as the grid method, which helps ensure accurate proportions.

If you're new to this method or want to learn more about it, I highly recommend checking out this in-depth guide I wrote on the topic

To use the grid method, I first resize the reference photo to match the dimensions of my paper, which are 2480 by 3508 pixels. I also position the car so that it fits nicely on my paper.

Then, I added a grid overlay of 15 by 10.5 squares on top of the resized reference photo, and I marked which squares were needed to sketch the car by coloring them green.

Next, I sketched the grid squares I marked on my paper.

After that, I first lightened the grid before I started sketching the outline.

To sketch the outline, I break up the outline into sections and easy-to-sketch lines.

When I decided what lines I want to sketch, I mark where it starts, where it ends, and where it crosses grid lines. Then I sketch the lines in one swift motion.

I do this for every line/segment on the outside edge of the car.

Step 4: Sketch The Basic Shapes Of The Audi RS6

Once the outline is done, sketching the rest of the RS6 gets a lot easier.

I started by sketching in the basic shapes like the windows, the grills, and the headlights.

Step 5: Sketch The Wheels Of The Audi RS6

Then I decided to sketch the wheels.

I first sketched the outline of the tires. To do this as accurately as possible, I marked where the top, right, bottom, and left edges are and then I marked where the outline crosses any grid lines. After that, I sketched the edge of the tire in one quick movement as smoothly as possible.

Sometimes getting the shape right can be a little bit tricky. If a wheel looks off to me, I try to figure out what's wrong with it. Then, I erase the whole wheel and try again until I'm satisfied.

Next, I sketched the outer rim edge and I marked the center.

To sketch the rim outline, I used the same technique as I did to sketch the tire outline.

And when marking where the center of the wheels are, I just carefully looked at the reference and made a good estimate based on where it should go.

After that, I made 5 somewhat straight lines from the center to the outer rim that divide the wheel up into 5 parts. For the precise position of these lines, I again carefully looked at my reference photo and made a good guess.

Next, I added the other leg of the Y-shaped spokes.

Then, I added some details to the spokes.

Lastly, I added more rim lines and I sketched the brake caliper and disc.

After I finished the front wheel, I repeated the necessary steps to sketch the rear wheel.

Step 6: Sketch The Details Of The Audi RS6

After I finished the wheels, I sketched all the details on the Audi RS6 like the body lines, the inside of the headlights, the interior, and the Audi logo.

Step 7: Sketch The Outline Of The Reflections On The Body Of The Audi RS6

To finish the sketch, I roughly outlined the reflections on the body of the Audi.

I looked at the reference photo to decide where to sketch the outlines.

Step 8: Color All Black Parts Of The Audi RS6

Now that the sketch is done, we can start coloring it.

Personally, I sometimes find the sketch overwhelming and I don't want to mess it up, making me scared to start coloring.

One easy fix that I found for this is to start coloring the easiest thing first: everything that's purely black.

I just look at the reference photo for what's black and color that on my drawing.

This also makes coloring the rest of the car a lot easier, imo.

Step 9: Color The Wheels Of The Audi RS6

Next, I like to get the wheels out of the way.

Most of the time, coloring the wheels is a lot easier than sketching them.

To color these RS6 wheels, I started by coloring the brake caliper with R160 and I colored the rim and the spokes with CG030.

Next, I used R6 to add some shadows on the brake caliper. I used NG03 to add shadows to the spoke and the rims, and I used it to color the tire.

Next, I deepened the shadows on the rims with CG070 and I added a few dark details to the caliper with R7. I also colored the tires with CG070.

And to finish the wheels off, I used NG06 to add some really dark grey shadows and details to the wheels.

Step 10: Color The Shadow Underneath The Audi RS6

After that, I colored the shadow.

I first colored the outer edge with CG030.

Then, I colored the part in between the outer edge and the black inside with CG070.

Lastly, I blended all those grey tones together to form a smooth-ish transition.

To do that, I colored over the black edge with CG070 to soften it.

I used CG030 to color over the CG070 edge to smooth it out.

And I used the colorless blender to color over the edge of the CG030 to soften it.

Step 11: Color The Front Grill Of The Audi RS6

Next up, I colored the front grill.

I colored the Audi-logo and the horizontal rectangle with CG070.

Then, I used NG06 to add some shadows and details to the logo and to darken the right 3/4 of that rectangle shape. And I smoothened the transition to the darker grey by blending out the left half of the rectangle with CG070.

Step 12: Color The Headlights Of The Audi RS6

After that, I colored the headlights.

I started by coloring both headlights with CG030.

Then, I added some darker shadows and details with NG03.

And lastly, I used CG070 to add some dark shadows and reflections at the top and a few little ones at the bottom of the headlights.

Step 13: Color The Windshield, The Interior, And The Roof Of The Audi RS6

Then, I colored the roof and the side window on the right of the windshield with CG030.

Next, I used NG03 to color the bottom half of the roof, the A-pillar, and some parts on the interior.

After that, I used CG070 to color the remainder of the interior as well as the left edge of the right A-pillar.

Lastly, I used NG06 to add the darkest shadows on the interior and to color the top, left, and bottom edges of the windshield and the right roof rack thingy.

Step 14: Color The Side Windows Of The Audi RS6

After that, I colored the side windows with CG030.

Then, I colored the sills and the roof rack with NG03.

Next, I used CG070 to add tree-like reflections on the windows and to color the bottom edge of the rook rack thing.

And to finish it off, I used NG06 to add the darkest tree reflections.

Step 15: Color The Mirror Caps Of The Audi RS6

Next, I colored the mirror caps of the RS6.

I first colored the left one with CG030 and then colored it again with NG03, but this time I left a light edge uncolored on the top left.

I also colored the right mirror with NG03.

Lastly, I used CG070 to add some even darker reflections on the caps while again leaving a light edge.

And I used NG06 to darken the right half of the left mirror cap and the left half of the right one.

Now the car is ready for the main body to be colored.

Step 16: Color The Main Body Of The Audi RS6

I started by coloring the lightest parts of the main body with RV270.

Then, I used R9 to color some darker pink reflections all over these lighter parts.

Next, I used R160 to color the remainder of the main body and I used it to darken some of the parts that I colored light pink, mainly on the front edge of the hood.

After that, I used R6 to add some slightly darker reflections all over the red parts.

And lastly, I used R7 to color the darkest reflections. I only used it in a few places (below the door mirror, the bottom bit of the side, and a small bit on the right of the bumper) as it's quite a dark color.

Step 17: Add Details To Your Audi RS6 Drawing With A Few Colored Pencils

Now that the RS6 is fully colored, it is lacking some details.

To add those details, I like to use a white and a black colored pencil.

I used the white colored pencil to add highlights on panel edges all over the car. I also used it to add some reflections to add the radiator lines on the front left and right grills.

I used the black pencil to add panel gaps and a dark outline around the headlights.

I also experimented with simplifying the front grill, but I hated it so I erased it in the next step.

Step 18: Add White Highlights On Your Audi RS6 Drawing

The car is almost done, but there is one thing that would make this drawing look even better (except for erasing the front grill thing) and that is adding some pure white highlights.

To do this, I used my white Posca PC-3M paint marker and I added highlights on the headlights, a little bit on the spokes of the wheels, on the front left grill, on the logo, and some on in the lighter reflections all over the car.

And now the car is fully done!
