1. Canson Illustration

By Far the Best Paper for Alcohol Markers

Canson Illustration paper has a smooth but slightly textured surface and it is not perfectly white. But this is what makes the colors more vibrant and saturated than on most other brands of paper.

Coloring with alcohol markers on this paper is so effortless. The colors look very solid and not at all uneven or spotty. The paper is 250 gsm / 92 lb. which makes it very good for blending as it is quite thick. And because it is very thick the ink rarely bleeds through the paper.

This paper will bleed when you go over the same spot too often when it is wet. And you can get fuzzy lines when going over wet ink.

2. Canson Bristol

Best for Alcohol Markers in Combination with Fineliners

The Canson Bristol paper has a very, very smooth surface which makes it really easy to color with markers. And because it is so smooth it makes it really suitable for fineliners too. This paper is also perfectly white unlike the Illustration paper.

The Bristol is 250 gsm / 92 lb. which makes it really good for blending and you easily get an even application of the ink of the markers. Like the Illustration paper this paper will also bleed a bit when with heavy usage, but if you let the layers dry before you go over them again the ink won't bleed.

3. Winsor & Newton Bleedproof Marker Paper

Best for Beginners and Cheapest

The Winsor & Newton Bleedproof marker paper is best for people who are new to drawing with alcohol based markers as it is very cheap and the markers behave very predictable. And because the paper is very thin (75 gsm / 20 lb.) it will use a lot less ink.

You don't have to worry about the ink bleeding through the paper as every sheet has a layer on the back of it which prevents the ink from going through it. Because it has that layer you do need to be a little careful on which side you draw though.

This paper is also perfectly white and it has a very smooth surface. However as the paper is very thin it can't absorb much ink so blending is a lot more difficult on this paper. And you can more easily get accidental folds or bends in the paper because it is thin.

The Winsor & Newton Bleedproof marker paper is available in A3, A4, 9x12" and 11x14" sized pads.
