How To Draw A Ford F-150 Raptor - Realistic Step-By-Step Guide For Beginners

In this car drawing tutorial, I'm going to show you how you can draw a simple yet realistic Ford Raptor with no drawing experience.

I've broken everything up into simple, easy-to-follow steps, so you can easily follow along with me on this Ford Raptor drawing.

Let's get started!

How Do You Draw A Ford Raptor?

To make a realistic drawing of a Ford F-150 Raptor, I first looked for a reference photo I liked.

After that, I created a sketch of the outline of the Ford using the grid method.

Next, I colored the car with alcohol markers starting with the black and the grey parts, before moving on to the main body of the car.

Lastly, I added some details with colored pencils and highlights with a Posca paint marker.

Step 1: Find A Reference Photo

The first step of creating a realistic drawing of a Ford F-150 Raptor is to find a reference photo.

I found this one on Unsplash:

I didn't like that it was light grey, so I chose to make it blue instead.

Step 2: Choose What Drawing Supplies You're Going To Use

To make this drawing I used Ohuhu Honolulu alcohol based markers in the colors Colorless Blender (0), Neutral Grey 03 (CG030), Neutral Grey 3 (NG03), Neutral Grey 07 (CG070), Neutral Grey 6 (NG06), Neutral Grey 7 (NG07), Black (120), Lavender Mist (B340), Cornflower Blue (B350), and Clematis (R13). I also used the black and white Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils.

And to add white highlights, I used a white Posca PC-3M paint marker.

I made this drawing on A4-sized Canson Illustration Manga paper.

Step 3: Sketch The Outline Of The Ford Raptor

Sketching a car with realistic proportions can be quite tricky.

That's why I like to use the grid method. If you're not sure what it is or how to use it, I highly recommend checking out this guide I wrote about it.

To use the grid method, I first overlay a grid on my reference photo of 15 by 10.5 squares. This fits the paper I'm using the best.

I also like to mark the squares that are necessary to sketch the car.

Next, I replicate that grid on my paper, 15 squares wide and 10.5 squares tall. This results in squares of 2 by 2 cm on my paper.

I only sketched the squares that were needed to sketch the whole car.

Next, I sketched the full outline of the car.

I break up the outer edge into small sections and then sketch these sections line by line. Then I choose a line, mark where it starts and ends, and where it crosses grid lines. Then, I sketch that line in one stroke.

I do this for the whole outline.

Step 4: Sketch The Parts Of The Ford F-150 Raptor

Now that the outline is done, we can start adding in all the parts of the car.

I started with the bigger parts and sketched the outline of those using the same technique as before.

After that, I slowly added more and more parts and details until the whole car (except for the wheels) was done.

Step 5: Sketch The Wheels Of The Ford Raptor

Next, I sketched the wheels.

I already sketched the outer edge of the tires when drawing the outline of the Ford Raptor.

So I went straight to the outer rim.

As it's an off-road car it has quite thick tires.

To sketch the outer edge, I carefully looked at the reference photo with the grid and marked the points where the outer rim crosses any of the grid lines.

I also marked the top, bottom, left, and right edges of it.

Then, I sketched the rim as smoothly as possible.

I did the same for the rear wheel. However, that one looks a bit different as the tire is bulging out a bit.

Next, I started sketching the spokes.

The spokes on the rear wheel are barely visible, so I just sketched what I could see. You can't really go wrong there.

On the front wheel, I marked the center with a small circle and I marked out the starts of the spokes where they attach to the outer rim.

After that, I connected those lines to the center of the wheel and called it done for now.

Now that sketch is done and ready to be colored.

Step 6: Color All Black Parts Of The Ford F-150 Raptor

I always start by coloring all pure black parts first. This makes coloring the rest of the car so much easier and makes the car look less overwhelming.

Step 7: Color The Wheels Of The Ford Raptor

Next, I colored the wheels.

This is quite simple.

I started by coloring the rims with NG03.

Next, I colored the tire with CG070.

After that, I added some shadows to the tire with NG07.

On the top half of the tire, the shadows are right above the rim up to half the thickness of the tire. And on the lower half of the tire, the shadows are on the lower half of the thickness of the tire.

I also colored the right tire with NG07.

Step 8: Color The Shadow Of The Ford F150 Raptor

Next, I colored the shadow.

I started by coloring the outer edge with CG030.

Next, I colored the remainder with CG070 and I colored the center with NG06.

To make the gradient from light to dark smoother, I blended the grey tones together.

To do this I used CG070 to color over the edge of the NG06 and I used CG030 to color over the edge of the CG070. Doing this makes the edges softer.

I also blended the light grey into the white of the paper by coloring over the outer edge of the shadow with the colorless blender.

And where you're done, it looks something like this.

Step 9: Color The Front Skid Plate Of The Ford Raptor

After that, I colored the front skid plate (or whatever this thing is called...) and the front bumper.

I started by coloring the lightest parts with NG03.

Next, I colored the remainder of the skid plate and some bits on the left side of the bumper with CG070.

Then, I colored the remainder of the front bumper with NG06. I also darkened the bottom half of the skid plate with this color.

Lastly, I added some dark lines between the different parts of the bumper and added some shadow to the bottom edges of the side pieces on the bumper. To do this I used NG07.

Step 10: Color The Front Grill Of The Ford F-150

Then, I moved on to the front grill.

I first colored the darkest parts for some reason. I used NG07 to color the lines on top of the "ORD" lettering and I colored the top edge, the right half of the left edge, and the bottom half of the bottom edge of the grill.

Next, I used NG06 to color the remainder of the bottom edge and the left half of the right edge of the grill.

After that, I used CG070 to color the remainder of the "ORD" letters as well as the whole "F" and I colored the last bits of the right edge.

Next, I colored the vertical edge on the left of the grill with NG03 and I colored the diagonal bit above it with CG030.

Step 11: Color The Headlights Of The Ford Raptor

After that, I started working on the headlights.

I first colored both headlights with CG030.

Then, I colored the parts that needed to be darker with NG03. This left a light edge and oval on the left headlight and only a light oval on the right one.

Next, I used CG070 to color the darker parts. On the left headlight I colored everything except for the E-shape on the left edge, the oval, and a rectangle in the bottom.

On the right headlight, I colored everything but the oval, the rectangle at the bottom, and the 3-shape on the right edge.

Lastly, I used NG06 to color the bits directly below and to the right of the oval shape in the top half of the left headlight.

I also colored the bit to the left of the oval shape on the right headlight.

Step 12: Color The Wheel Arches Of The Ford Raptor

Next, I colored the wheel arches with CG030.

Then, I used NG03 to color the full rear arch and most of the front ones. On the left front one, I left a lighter spot on the right of it.

After that, I used CG070 to color the top right edge of the rear wheel arch and the top of the left front arch.

I also colored the bottom left of the front right wheel arch.

Lastly, I added NG06 to the bottom left of the front right arch.

Step 13: Color The Grey Parts On The Hood Of The Ford F-150

Then, I moved on to the grey bits on the hood.

I started by coloring the right stripe with CG030.

Then, I added some shading and reflection to that line with NG03 and I colored the vents in the center just below the windshield.

Next, I used CG070 to add a little bit more shading to the bottom and top of the stripe on the right, I colored the stripe on the left, and I added some shading on the air vents in the center.

To finish it off, I colored the top half of the left stripe with NG06 as well as the right half of the air vent.

Step 14: Color The Windshield Of The Ford Raptor

After that, I colored the front windshield.

I first colored the parts of the rear window and the right A-pillar with CG070.

Then, I colored the rest with NG07.

Step 15: Color The Side Windows Of The Ford F-150 Raptor

Next, I colored the side windows of the Ford Raptor.

I started by coloring the windows with CG030.

Then, I used CG070 to color the grey parts of the door mirror and the window sills.

Lastly, I used NG06 to add some shadows on the door mirror arm.

Step 16: Color Some Miscellaneous Parts Of The Ford Raptor

There are a few small parts that need to be colored grey.

I first colored the side step thing with NG03.

Then, I colored the edge of the rear deck with CG070.

And I colored the antenna (I think) on the roof with NG06.

And that's all the grey parts done!

Step 17: Color The Main Body Of The Ford F-150 Raptor

Now it's (finally) time to color the main body of the car, the part that I like the most.

I didn't want to make it this light grey color, so Instead, I chose to make it blue.

I started by coloring the whole body of the car with B340.

Next, I added the shadows with B350.

And to finish it off, I used R13 to color the darkest shadowy bits. I used it mainly on the front of the car.

Step 18: Add Details To The Ford Raptor Drawing

Now that the car is fully colored we can start adding some details.

To do this, I like to use a black and a white pencil.

I used the white colored pencil to add highlights on the wheels, especially the spokes, and some body edges.

I used the black pencil to add panel gaps to the car. Normally I would also color the door gaps, but I forgot to do so...

Step 19: Add A Few Highlights To Your Ford Raptor Drawing

Lastly, I like to add a few highlights on the car.

I added some on the rims, the headlights, and some other bits here and there.

And that's how I drew this realistic but simple Ford F-150 Raptor.

I hope you enjoyed it!
