How to Draw a Ferrari LaFerrari - Detailed Step-by-Step Guide

How to Draw a Ferrari LaFerrari

In this week's car drawing tutorial, I'll show you how to draw my favorite of the holy trinity: the LaFerrari!

I decided to make it the iconic Ferrari red: Rosso Corsa.

This drawing turned out soo well!

This tutorial is broken up into very detailed, clear, and simple steps.

Let's get started!

Drawing Supplies I Used to Draw the Ferrari LaFerrari

To draw this LaFerrari, I used the following art supplies:

  • A graphite pencil, a ruler, a kneaded eraser, and a regular eraser;
  • Winsor & Newton Promarkers in the colors Ice Grey 1 (IG1), Ice Grey 2 (IG2), Ice Grey 4 (IG4), Ice Grey 7 (IG7), Black (XB), Soft Lime (Y828), Pastel Pink (R738), Salmon Pink (R547), Lipstick Red (R576), Red (R666), and Burgundy (R424);

Reference Photos I Used to Draw this Ferrari LaFerrari

To make this drawing of the LaFerrari, I used 3 reference photos. 1 for the proportions and the perspective, 1 for the lighting and the reflections, and 1 for the color.

I used this photo for the perspective.

I used this photo for the reflections.

And I used this photo as a color reference.

How Do You Draw a Realistic Ferrari LaFerrari?

To make a realistic drawing of a LaFerrari, first gather a few reference photos for the perspective, proportions, lighting, reflections, and color.

After that, create a sketch of the outline of the car using the grid method.

Next, color the car with alcohol markers starting with the black and the grey parts, before moving on to the main body of the LaFerrari.

Lastly, add some details with colored pencils and highlights with a Posca paint marker.

Step 1: Sketch the Outline of the Ferrari LaFerrari

I'll be using the grid method in this tutorial to Sketch the LaFerrari. This technique makes sketching the outline of a car way easier. Here's a detailed tutorial if you want to know more about it.

1. Resize your reference photo for the proportions to have the same proportions and aspect ratio as your paper.

My paper is A4 size, resulting in a photo of 3508 by 2480 pixels.

2. Add a grid overlay on top of the reference photo.

I use a grid of 15 by 10.5 squares as this results in squares of 2 by 2 cm on my paper.

3. Recreate the grid on your paper.

I only sketched the squares needed to sketch the LaFerrari. This makes it easier to see in what square I need to draw.

4. Start sketching the outline of the car.

Start by choosing part of the outline of the LaFerrari, mark where the line begins and ends, and mark where it crosses grid lines. Then sketch that line in one swift motion. Then move on to the next bit and repeat these steps until you've sketched the whole outline of the car.

I like to start on the left and work my way up and around the car. I also sketched the shapes of the wheels before I sketched the wheel arches. This makes it easier to get the wheel shape correct which is very important if you want your car to turn out realistic.

5. Sketch the basic shapes of the LaFerrari.

Just like with sketching the outline, you choose a part of the car you want to sketch, mark where it starts and ends, mark where it crosses grid lines, and then sketch the line in a quick motion.

6. Sketch the details of the Ferrari.

Now that the basic shapes are in it's easier to sketch the details like the shapes inside the headlights, the spokes of the wheels, the interior, etc.

7. Lastly, sketch the reflections onto the body of the LaFerrari.

This car has some complex reflections and sketching them out beforehand makes it easier to color them in later on. They don't have to be perfect, just use the reference photo for the reflections as a rough guide.

Make sure you erase your sketch until you can only barely see it before you're going to color each part of the drawing.

If you don't do this your sketch will show through your drawing making it look less realistic.

Step 2: Color All Black Parts of the Laferrari

8. Use the Black Promarker to color all pure black parts of the LaFerrari.

Sometimes when drawing, I get overwhelmed by looking at the sketch.

I don't want to mess it up...

So I do the easiest thing I can do while still making a bit of progress on the drawing: coloring all pure black parts. This makes the drawing look a lot less daunting in my experience.

Step 3: Color the Wheels of the Ferrari LaFerrari

9. Use Ice Grey 1 to color the rims of the wheels.

10. Use Ice Grey 2 to darken the dakrer parts of the rims.

11. Use Ice Grey 4 to make the shadow bit darker and to color the tires.

12. Use Ice Grey 7 to make some shadow parts of the rims and spokes really dark and to color the tires except for the top bit.

13. Use Soft Lime to color the logo of the center caps of the wheels.

Step 4: Color the Shadow of the Ferrari LaFerrari

14. Use Ice Grey 1 to color the entire shadow underneath the LaFerrari.

15. Use Ice Grey 4 to color in between the black and the Ice Grey 1 of the shadow.

16. Use Ice Grey 7 to blend the black into to Ice Grey 4 by coloring over the edge where the two colors meet.

17. Use Ice Grey 4 to blend the Ice Grey 7 into the Ice Grey 4 by coloring over the edge where the two colors meet.

18. Use Ice GRey 1 to blend the Ice Grey 4 into the Ice Grey 1 by coloring over the edge where the two colors meet.

19. Use the colorless blender to blend the Ice Grey 1 into the white of the paper by coloring over the edge of the Ice Grey 1.

Step 5: Color the Front of the LaFerrari

20. Use Ice Grey 1 to color the lightest part of the front of the LaFerrari.

21. Use Ice Grey 4 to color the remainder of the grey parts on the front and the splitter.

22. Use Ice Grey 7 to add some dark reflections and shadows to the front and the splitter of the LaFerrari.

Step 6: Color the Side Skirt of the Ferrari LaFerrari

23. Use Ice Grey 4 to color the side skirt.

24. Use Ice Grey 7 to darken the far left bit and a line through the center starting from the right.

Step 7: Color the Headlights of the LaFerrari

25. Use Ice Grey 1 to color both headlights.

26. Use Ice Grey 2 to color the darker bit while leaving the highest parts untouched.

27. Use Ice Grey 4 to add some details and dark reflections to both headlights of the LaFerrari.

28. Use Ice Grey 7 to add just a few dark shadows and reflections to both headlights, mainly around the round light source.

Step 8: Color the Greenhouse of the Ferrari LaFerrari

29. Use Ice Grey 1 to color the roof, the A-pillar, and the right side window.

30. Use Ice Grey 2 to color the rest of the greenhouse.

31. Use Ice Grey 2 to color the bottom half of the roof and the A-pillar and blend it into Ice Grey 1 by coloring over the edge where the two colors meet with Ice Grey 1.

32. Use Ice Grey 4 to color:

  • the left 2/3 of the interior (while leaving the window wiper lighter grey)
  • the top of the window
  • the inside of the right A-pillar
  • the bottom edge of the grey bit just below the windshield
  • some reflections on the side window
  • and some reflections on the top of the roof

33. Use Ice Grey 2 to blend the Ice Grey 4 on the right of the interior into the Ice Grey 2 by coloring over the edge where the two colors meet.

34. Use Ice Grey 4 to add more reflections to the side window and the right of the windshield and to color the left half of the interior.

35. Use Ice Grey 4 to blend the Ice Grey 7 into the Ice Grey 4 where the two colors meet on the right half of the interior.

Step 9: Color the Ferrari Logo on the Front of the LaFerrari

36. Use Soft Lime to color the Ferrari logo on the front of the LaFerrari.

Step 10: Color the Main Body of the Ferrari LaFerrari

37. Use Pastel Pink to color the lightest pinkish reflections on the main body.

38. Use the colorless blender to blend the Pastel Pink into the white of the paper in a few places:

  • below the right mirror/left of the right headlight
  • just below the windshield
  • and below the left mirror

39. Use Salmon Pink to color the remainder of the body, overlapping the Pastel Pink in some places, while avoiding the 3 places that need to stay white.

40. Use Pastel Pink to blend the Salmon Pink into the PAstel Pink by going over the edge where the two colors meet in the following places:

  • to the right of the left headlight
  • below the windshield
  • above the logo on the front
  • between the logo and the right headlight
  • and below the right mirror/to the left of the right headlight

41. Use Lipstick Red to color the reflections of the main body that are darker than Salmon Pink, mostly on the front of the car.

42. Use Salmon pink to blend the edge of the Lipstick Red on the reflections below the windshield and a few other places.

43. Use Red to darken some of those reflections even more, especially in these places:

  • the bottom and the right of the left mirror cap
  • the middle left of the right mirror cap
  • the red reflection around the big side intake
  • the reflections around the left headlight
  • the reflection just above the black vent above the logo on the front
  • the reflections around the right headlight
  • and the bit surrounded by the front grills, just above the front splitter

44. Use Burgundy to add some really dark reddish reflections and shadows on the car in the following places:

  • multiple places on the side
  • just a little bit on the bottom right of the left mirror cap
  • just below the left headlight
  • the bottom half of the bit above the vent above the logo on the front
  • the down-facing edge just above the front grills.
  • the bottom edge and the left of the right mirror cap
  • and a few places around the right headlight

Step 11: Add Details to Your Drawing of the LaFerrari

45: Use the White Derwent Coloursoft colored pencil to add highlights and details in the following parts:

  • the spokes of the wheels
  • the panel gap of the door on the side of the car
  • the lightest parts of the headlights
  • and some cloud reflections and other reflections all over the car

Just look at the reference photo for the reflections where all the lightest reflections and details are and add those in your drawing with the white pencil.

And to color the cloud reflections, just scribble around a bit and make them thin and long.

46. Use the Black colored pencil to add details like panel gaps, dark shadows, and a few dark reflections all around the car, mainly in these places:

  • the darkest bits of the spokes of the wheels
  • the dark parts in the headlights
  • the door gap on the side
  • some details on the tires
  • the door gap on the roof
  • the panel gaps on the front of the car
  • some details in the reflections on the black/grey bits in the grills
  • and some reflections on the greenhouse.

47. Use Dove Grey to add some soft light grey parts on the top and the top of the bottom of each tire.

Step 12: Add White Highlights to Your LaFerrari Drawing

48. Use the White Posca paint marker to add pure white highlights al over the car. Just look at the reference photo as a guide for where to add them.

I mostly added the reflections in:

  • the headlights
  • the wheels
  • and the lightest reflections all around the car
