Bursts, Spikes, and Sparkles - How to Draw Fireworks Step by Step

In this drawing tutorial, I'll show you 3 easy and fun ways to draw fireworks.
First, a classic multicolor burst, then one with sharp, straight rays, and finally one that looks like a shimmering sphere of light.
Let's get started!

Drawing Supplies I Used to Draw Fireworks
To draw fireworks, I thought it would look nice if I used paint markers on black paper.
So, I bought the 30 Colors set of Ohuhu Acrylic Pens. I used the colors White 101, Champagne Y38, Copper YR413, Strawberry Red R017, Light Lavender V410, Dark Violet V021, Cerulean B917, and Light Cerulean BG911.

These markers are metallic, which gives the fireworks a cool glistering effect.
I also bought some black Canson Mixed Media paper to draw on.
How to Draw an Orange and Purple Sunburst Firework?

Step 1: Draw a Slightly Curved Line for the Tail of the Firework
To draw a regular sunburst firework, I started by drawing the orange tail with Copper YR413.
I drew the tail slightly curved to make it look more interesting.

Step 2: Add 5 Curved lines on the Top of the Firework Tail
Next, I added 5 curved lines on the end of the tail using the same colored marker.

Step 3: Color 5 Thicker Purple Lines in Between the Orange Ones
Then, I added a thicker purple line in between every orange one. 5 in total.
For this, I used Dark Violet V021.

Step 4: Draw a Short Purple Line in Between Every Line
After that, I used Dark Violet V021 once again to add a curved line in between every line we had already colored. So, 10 in total.
These lines are thinner and shorter than the other purple ones, and they stick a bit further outwards.

Step 5: Add Orange Sparkles to the Firework
Next, I used Copper YR413 again to add a few sparkles on the ends of the thin purple lines, and I added some dots connecting these thinner lines to the core of the firework.

Step 6: Color the Core of the Firework Gold
Lastly, I used Champagne Y38 to add a golden glow to the core of the firework by coloring dots from the center outwards.

And that's how I drew this simple yet cool-looking orange and purple sunburst firework effect.
Now onto the next one: the spiky needle firework.
How to Draw a Needle Burst Firework?

Step 1: Draw 5 Straight White Lines Pointing Away from the Center
To draw this sharp needle burst firework, I started by drawing 5 straight white lines pointing outwards from the center.
To do this, I used the White 101 paint marker.

Step 2: Add Short Spiky Red Lines
Next, I added spiky red lines of varying lengths in between the white lines using Strawberry Red R017.

Step 3: Color A Few Short White Lines Between the Red Ones
After that, I added some more white lines in between the red ones to fill up some of the empty space.

Step 4: Add Gold Lines and Dots to the Firework
Then, I used Champagne Y38 to add some short gold lines and dots. I tried to evenly space them out.

Step 5: Draw a Few More White Lines to Fill the Empty Space
It felt like it was just a bunch of lines at this moment.
When I experimented drawing this type of firework, I made it smaller and more dense, which looked better in my opinion.
To fix this one, I made the first 5 white lines thicker and pointier and added some more short white lines to make the firework feel more dense.
This made it look a lot better.

With this now done, we can continue with my favorite firework, both to draw and to see: the shimmering sphere.
How to Draw a Firework that Looks Like a Shimmering Sphere of Light?

Step 1: Draw a Circle Full of Short Blue Lines
I started by sketching a circle on my paper. But since this paper is black, you can't see it at all... But to show you what it looked like, I photoshopped this red circle on my drawing.
After sketching the circle, I started adding these short outward-pointing blue lines around the core of the firework.
To do this, I used Cerulean B917.

As you may notice, the core is not in the center of the circle. It's more towards to top.
When all the blue lines are done, it should look something like this.

Step 2: Add Lighter Blue Lines on the Outer Edge of the Firework
To give it this sphere-like effect, I added some lighter blue lines on the edge of the circle using Light Cerulean BG911.

Step 3: Color a Few Short Pink Lines to Add More Color
After that, I filled the middle of the firework with some short pink lines to make it look a bit more colorful. I did this using Lavender V410.

Step 4: Draw Short Gold Lines in the Center of the Firework
Next, I added some gold lines in and around the core with Champagne Y38 to kind of show the color transition from gold to pink to blue.

Step 5: Add a Few White Highlights in the Middle of the Firework
Then, I added some white highlights to the center. Just a few. I did not want to overdo it as white is quite bright.

Step 6: Color a Golden Tail Leading up to the Firework
And to finish off this shimmering firework sphere, I added a golden tail with Champagne Y38.
I also added some dots around it to make it look like sparks.

Final Result: A Beautiful Firework Scene
And that's how you draw fireworks in a fun and easy way!
