How to Draw a Lykan Hypersport - Full Step-by-Step Guide

In today's car drawing tutorial, I'll show how to draw a simple but realistic drawing of the W Motors Lykan Hypersport.

I explain every step in full detail with tons of photos so you can easily draw your own Lykan Hypersport.

Let's get started!

How Do You Draw a W Motors Lykan Hypersport?

To draw a Lykan Hypersport, you first need to look for reference photos online. Once you've found the perfect photo, it's time to sketch the outline and the details of the car using the grid method to make it a little easier. After that, You color the car part by part with alcohol markers to give it a realistic look. And to finish it off, you add a few details with a white, grey, and black pencils, and you add a few highlights with a white paint marker.

1. Look for Reference Photos

The first step of the drawing process is gathering a few reference photos.

I try to avoid infringing on someone else's copyright by merging aspects of 3 photos into 1 drawing.

I look for 1 photo for the perspective and proportions, 1 for the lighting and reflections, and 1 for the color. Although, I didn't really need the color reference for this drawing as I had already decided on the color I was going to use.

I ended up using the following photos which I found on Instagram:

I used this photo for the proportions and perspective.

I used this photo for the lighting and reflections.

And I used this photo as a rough color reference.

2. Decide What Art Supplies to Use

After we've decided what photos to use, it's time to choose are drawing materials.

You can use a variety of drawing supplies like markers and colored pencils.

I chose to keep this drawing simple, so I'll be using alcohol markers. To be more specific I used the Ohuhu Honolulu markers in the colors Bougainvillaea (R190), Coralessence (R200), Strong Red (R230), and Garnet (R240).

I also used the Winsor & Newton Promarkers in the colors Ice Grey 1 (IG1), Ice Grey 2 (IG2), Ice Grey 4 (IG4), Ice Grey 7 (IG7), and Black (XB).

To add details to the drawing I used the White, Platinum, and Black Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils.

To add highlights to the drawing, I used a white Posca PC-3M paint marker.

I also used an HB graphite pencil, a ruler, a kneaded eraser (to lighten my sketch before coloring), and a regular eraser.

And I made this drawing on A4-sized Canson Illustration Manga paper.

3. Sketch the Outline of the Lykan Hypersport

Sketching a car like the W Motors Lykan Hypersport accurately can be quite difficult.

Luckily there are some shortcuts you can take.

For example, I like to use the grid method to make sketching cars a lot easier. This is also the technique I'll be using in this tutorial.

If you'd like to know more about how to use this sketching technique, make sure to check out this article I made.

To use the grid method, I started by resizing the reference photo for the perspective to have the same size as my piece of paper which is 29.7 by 21 cm or 3508 by 2480 pixels.

Next, I added a grid overlay of 15 by 10.5 squares on top of the photo and marked the squares that contained parts of the car.

After that, I recreated the grid on my piece of paper. Each grid line is 2cm apart starting from the top left.

Now, it's time to start sketching the car.

I started by sketching the basic outline of the car. I started by picking an edge of the car, marked where it begins and ends and where it crosses grid lines, and then I sketched it in one quick motion.

I did this for every part of the outline of the Lykan until I sketched the whole outer edge.

4. Sketch the Details of the Lykan

Now that the outline is in place, it's a lot easier to sketch the rest of the car.

I started by sketching the more basic shapes of the car, including the windshield, the side window, the grill pieces on the front, and a few more parts here and there.

These are the bigger and most important parts.

After that, I added all of the smaller details until only the wheels were left.

Sketching the wheels can be a bit tricky, that's why I wanted to explain how I sketched them in a bit more detail.

I first marked where the center of the wheel is and sketched 2 ellipses around it. The bigger ellipse is a bit shifted to the left as it is more inset into the wheel.

I also sketched the outer rim where the rim meets the tire.

Next, I added a line for each of the 4 visible spokes starting at the bigger inside ellipse and pointing toward the outside rim.

When sketching these I carefully looked at the reference photo where each line start and begins before I sketched them.

After that, I added 2 lines from each of the endpoints of the lines we just sketched to the outside forming a triangular shape.

Then, I made the spokes a bit thicker by adding a line to each side of each spoke and I marked where the lighter bits at the tip of each spoke would be.

Lastly, I added more details and ellipse-shaped lines to finish off the wheel.

After that, I sketched the rear wheel using the same steps to complete the sketch of the Lykan Hypersport.

5. Color the Black Parts of the W Motors Lykan

Figuring out which parts to start coloring can be tricky and it can be a bit overwhelming.

That's why I like to color all pure black parts first.

This makes the drawing look a lot simpler.

To know which parts to color black I looked at the reference photo for the lighting and reflections and looked for the pure black parts.

For the rest of the steps, the reference photo for the lighting will be the leading reference photo to look at to know which parts to draw in which color.

6. Color the Grey Parts around the Front Grills of the Lykan

Next up, I colored the grey front bumper/grill pieces.

I started by coloring the lightest parts on the left and the top right with Ice Grey 2.

Then, I used Ice Grey 4 to color the rest.

And lastly, I added some dark grey details and shadow bits with the Ice Grey 7 marker.

7. Color the Headlights of the Lykan Hypersport

Next, I colored both headlights.

I started by coloring both lights with Ice Grey 1 first.

Then, I used Ice Grey 2 to add a darker edge around both headlights and I darkened the middle and right of the right headlight.

After that, I used Ice Grey 4 to add some dark spots at the bottom of the left headlight. I also used Ice Grey 4 as well as Ice Grey 7 to add darker tones to the right headlight.

To do this I carefully looked in the reference photo which parts needed to be darker.

8. Color the W Motors Logo on the Hood

After that, I Used Ice Grey 4 to color the remainder of the W Motors logo on the front of the car.

9. Color the Wheels of the Lykan

Next up, I colored the wheels, starting by coloring the light grey ends of each spoke with Ice Grey 2.

After that, I colored the tires and a bit in and around the center of the wheels.

Lastly, I used Ice Grey 7 to color the remainder of the wheels and to darker the bottom half of the front tire and the whole rear tire.

10. Color the Shadow of the Lykan

Next, I colored the shadow of the car.

The shadow is quite strong and stretched out as the reference photo for the lighting was taken during sunset.

I started by coloring the darkest grey parts first with Ice Grey 7. These are mainly right where the wheels are and to the right of them.

After that, I colored the rest of the shadow with Ice Grey 4.

11. Color the Side Skirt of the Lykan Hypersport

After that, I colored the side skirt.

I first used ice grey 4 to color it fully.

And then, I used Ice Grey 7 to add the darker reflections to the bottom left and the top right bit.

12. Color the W Motors Logo Behind the Front Wheel

Next, I colored the W Motors Logo on the side of the car, just behind the front wheel.

And to do so I used Ice Grey 4.

13. Color the Windshield of the Lykan

Next up, I colored the front windshield.

I first colored the side window you can see through the windshield with Ice Grey 1.

Then I colored the remainder with Ice Grey 2, but I left and space between the IG2 and the black because that's going to be darker.

Next, I used Ice Grey 4 to color the whole part of the windshield below and to the right of the side window. I also added a darker line around the side window and I left the top and the left lighter grey.

Lastly, I used Ice Grey 7 to blend the black into the Ice Grey 4 by coloring multiple times over the edge where the two colors meet.

I also used Ice Grey 4 to blend out the edge where the Ice Grey 7 and the Ice Grey 4 meet.

14. Color the Mirror on the Left of the Lykan Hypersport

After that, I colored the left mirror cap.

I started by coloring the light rectangular shape first with Ice Grey 2.

Then, I colored the top half with Ice Grey 4 and the bottom half with Ice Grey 7.

15. Color the Right Mirror & the Surrounding Grey Parts

Next up, I colored the right mirror and the surrounding grey parts like the window sills and the air intake.

I first used Ice Grey 2 to color all of the lighter parts: the bottom of the mirror cap, the edge around the intake, and the window triangle.

Next, I used Ice Grey 4 to color the rest of the grey parts. I also used it to add a darker edge to the top left and the bottom of the edge around the air intake.

Lastly, I used Ice Grey 7 to darken the top half of the mirror cap while leaving a lighter edge at the top, the door and window sills above the mirror cap, and the bottom edge and the top right edge of the intake.

16. Color the Grey Part of the A-Pillar

After that, I colored the last grey part: the A-pillar.

I first used Ice Grey 2 to color the whole bit.

Then, I used Ice Grey 4 to color the left half and I blended it out with Ice Grey 2.

Lastly, I used Ice Grey 7 to color the left bit and blended it into the IG4 with Ice Grey 4.

17. Color the Main Body of the Lykan Hypersport

Now it's finally time to color the main body of the car.

But before I did that I erased the sketch lines so that they become very light and won't shine through the ink of the markers.

Then, I used R190 to color the lightest red-pinkish parts first.

To decide what parts needed to be light pink, I looked at the reference photo for the lighting a looked for the lightest parts. These are the ones that need to be this light pink.

After that, I colored most of the rest of the body of the Lykan with R200 and blended it in some places into the lighter pink.

I left a few of the parts that needed to become darker uncolored.

Next, I used R230 to color the darker parts like the roof, the lines across the frunk, some parts one the front bumper, and a few more here and there.

Lastly, I used R240 to color the darkest red parts which are:

  • the top half of the dark red part just above the grill
  • the triangular shape on the bottom of the car below the right headlight
  • the reflections around the side intake
  • a bit above the rear wheel
  • and a few more small bits here and there

18. Add Details to Your Lykan Drawing with some Colored Pencils

The Lykan is now fully colored, but it's lacking a lot of the details.

That's where the white, grey, and black pencils come into play.

I added a few highlights and details with the white pencil. Mainly on panel edges, the headlights, and the lightest parts of the wheels.

I used the black pencil to add all the panel gaps and the details to the spokes.

And I used the grey pencil to add some refinements to the tires and spokes.

19. Add Highlights to Your Lykan Drawing

Your Lykan drawing is now almost done.

To make it look even better than it does right now, I added a few bright white highlights with the Posca PC-3M paint marker.

I looked at the reference photo for the lighting and looked for the brightest parts and added highlights in those places in my drawing.
