How To Draw A Flower - Simple Yet Realistic Step-By-Step Tutorial

Want to learn how to draw a flower that looks realistic but still is easy to draw?
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to draw a flower, a white cosmos to be exact.
I explain each step in detail so you can easily follow along and create your own simple yet realistic flower drawing.
Let's get started!

Drawing Supplies I Used
I really like alcohol markers, so that's what I chose to use to create this drawing.
I used the Ohuhu Honolulu markers in the colors RV330 Strawberry Pink, R350 Dark Purple Grey, Y070 Acid Yellow, CG030 Neutral Grey 03, and BG060 Deep Cool Grey.
If you're on a tighter budget, these Caliart markers seem like a good and cheap alternative.
I also used some Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils: 2400 White and 2300 Black.
And I made this drawing on my favorite marker paper: Canson Illustration Manga. I cut one sheet of paper in half to make it A5-size.
The Reference Photo I Used
To make this flower drawing, I used an image I found on Unsplash as a reference.

How Do You Draw A Flower?
To draw a flower, you first sketch a big circle with a small one inside. Next, you sketch two curved lines outward from the center to the outer edge for each petal. Then you fill the background with a dark color. After that, you color the petals light grey and the center yellow. And to finish it off, you add just a few white and black dots to the center yellow bit.
Step 1: Mark The Outer Edges & The Center Of The Flower
To sketch a flower, I like to start by first marking where the top, right, bottom, and left edges are.
I also marked the center with a small circle.

Step 2: Sketch A Circle
Next, I sketched a circle through the outer edge markings.
On the circle, I marked with a darker line where each of the tips of the petals will be to make sketching the petals a bit easier.

Step 3: Sketch The Petals Of The Flower
After that, I sketched each of the petals.
Each petal consists of two lines that curve outwards that connect the flat tip to the center. The flat tip has a slightly serrated edge.
I first sketched the petal on the bottom left as it is in front of all the other petals.

To prevent the sketch from showing through the marker ink, I lightened it with and eraser.
Step 4: Color The Background Of The Flower
Next up, I colored the background of the flower.
In the reference photo, there are these vague pink flowers that I wanted to include in my drawing. I simplified them to pink blobs to make them easier to draw while still giving a similar effect.
To color these blobs I used RV330 Strawberry Pink.

Then, I colored the remainder of the background with R350 Dark Purple Grey.
During this, I made the tip of the petals look a bit serrated.
I made the dark purple blend a bit into the pink by coloring over the edges with RV330 Strawberry Pink.

Step 5: Color The Center Of The Flower
After that, I colored the center of the flower with Y070 Acid Yellow.
I also made this center have a serrated edge.

Step 6: Color The Petals Of The Flower
Next, I colored the petals of the flower.
I started by adding a bunch of straight lines pointing from the center outwards.
To do this, I used CG030 Neutral Grey 03.
I also colored in some places more to make them more shadowy.

Then, I used BG060 Deep Cool Grey to add some darker grey textures and shadows.
I mainly added this at edges where 2 petals overlap and in deeper folds in the petals.

Step 7: Color The Stamens On The Outer Edge Of The Center
To finish the flower drawing off, I colored short black lines on the outer edge of the yellow bit to represent the stamens.
I used a white pencil to add some short white lines next to the black stamens and to add some light dots in the center. For the dots in the center, I used less pressure to make them less bright.
Now the flower drawing is done!
