How to Draw a Ferrari 488 Pista?
To make a realistic drawing of a Ferrari 488 Pista, first gather a few reference photos for the perspective, proportions, lighting, reflections, and color.
After that, create a sketch of the outline of the car using the grid method.
Next, color the car with alcohol markers starting with the black and the grey parts, before moving on to the main body of the 488 Pista.
Step 1: Look for Reference Photos of the Ferrari 488 Pista
When deciding to draw a car like the Ferrari 488 Pista, I always start by looking for reference photos. To be more specific, I look for a reference photo for the proportions and the angle, a photo for the reflections on the car, and one for the color.
When looking for photos, I came across this front and side view of a 488 Pista that fit my vision.
Then, I found this image with some amazing reflections.
And finally, I looked up an image of this beautiful purple called Viola Hong Kong.
Step 2: Choose Your Drawing Supplies
After I had all the reference photos I needed, I chose what art supplies I was going to use for this drawing.
I wanted to keep it simple, so I decided to use alcohol markers. I used Winsor & Newton Promarkers in the colors Ice Grey 1 (IG1), Ice Grey 2 (IG2), Ice Grey 4 (IG4), Ice Grey 7 (IG7), Black (XB), and Soft Lime (Y828).
I also used 2 Ohuhu Honolulu markers in the colors Pearl Violet (V050) and Dark Violet (V080).
To ensure that the markers would create a solid finish I used the best marker paper I know: Canson Illustration Manga paper.
I also used 3 colored pencils to add the fine details. I used Derwent Coloursoft pencils to do this, specifically the White, Dove Grey, and Black.
To add those amazing reflections I used a white Posca PC-3M.
To sketch the car, I used a ruler, an eraser, a kneaded eraser, and an HB pencil.
Step 3: Sketch the Outline of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Sketching a car with accurate proportions is a difficult thing to do. That's why I like to use a technique called the grid method. This technique makes it so much easier to achieve realistic proportions without too much work. Here's a more in-depth article on how to use this technique.
The first thing I did was I resized the reference photo for the proportions to the same size as my piece of paper which is 29.7 by 21 cm or 3508 by 2480 pixels.
Next, I added a grid overlay of 15 by 10.5 squares on top of the photo and I marked the squares I needed to sketch the car.
After that, I recreated the grid on my paper. You can sketch all squares, but I like to just sketch the ones I need.
Then, I started sketching the outline of the car. I started on the left and just chose a line.
I marked where it starts, where it crosses grid lines, and where it ends. Then, I sketched the line in one quick motion.
I did this for every line on the outside of the car.
Step 4: Sketch the Details of the Ferrari 488 Pista
After that, I sketched all the parts and details of the Pista.
I again started on the left, chose a line, and marked the start, end, and grid intersections before sketching it in a swift motion.
The wheels are a little more tricky, so I broke them down into simple steps.
I first sketched the outside rim and marked where the center is.
Then I also marked where the spokes attach to the center and I sketched 5 short lines from those points.
Next, I sketched 2 lines that attach to the outside rim from the end of each of the shorter lines in a V-shape.
Lastly, I added some depth to the spokes and I added a few details.
After that, I also sketched the windshield as I forgot to do so earlier.
Step 5: Sketch the Reflections on the Ferrari 488 Pista
To finish off the sketch I also sketch the reflection onto the car.
I first looked at the reference photos, Identified all of the shapes of the reflections, and recreated those on the car in my sketch.
It doesn't have to be perfect. The reference photo serves just as a rough guide.
Step 6: Color All Pure Black Parts of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Next, I started actually coloring the car.
When I finish a sketch of a car, I sometimes get a bit overwhelmed by it.
To overcome this I color the easiest parts first: all pure black parts.
This is the easiest thing to do. I just look at the reference photo for the reflections, see what bits are fully black, and then color those on my drawing.
Step 7: Color the Wheels of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Next up are the wheels.
They are quite simple now that the black parts are already colored.
I just colored the remainder with Ice Grey 7 and that's it for now.
Step 8: Color the Front Aero Parts of the Ferrari 488 Pista
After that, I colored the front splitter and aero parts.
I first colored this bit with Ice Grey 4.
Then, I colored the remaining parts with Ice Grey 7.
Step 9: Color the Side Skirt of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Next, I colored the side skirt with Ice Grey 4.
After that, I added a dark grey reflection to the top and left of it with Ice Grey 7.
Step 10: Color the Shadow Below the Ferrari 488 Pista
After that, I colored the shadow underneath the Ferrari.
I started by coloring the whole shadow with Ice Grey 1.
Then, I used Ice Grey 4 to color between the light grey and the black.
Lastly, I blended all grey tones together to form a smooth gradient.
I started by blending the black into the grey by coloring over the edge of the black with Ice Grey 7.
Then, I used Ice Grey 4 to blend out the Ice Grey 7.
Next, I used Ice Grey 1 to blend out the Ice Grey 4.
And lastly, I used the colorless blender marker to blend the Ice Grey 1 into the white of the paper.
Step 11: Color the Headlights of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Next up, I colored the headlights with Ice Grey 2.
Then, I used Ice Grey 4 to add the darker parts.
Lastly, I used Ice Grey 7 to color the darkest reflections and shadows.
Step 12: Color the Ferrari Logo on the Front of the 488 Pista
After that, I colored the Ferrari logo on the front with Soft Lime
Step 13: Color the Side Windows of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Next, I colored the side windows of the Pista with Ice Grey 4.
Then, I added some reflections with Ice Grey 7.
Lastly, I added some very dark reflections with Black.
Step 14: Color the Windshield and the Interior of the Ferrari 488 Pista
After that, I colored the lightest parts of the windshield which are the rear window and the side window which you can see through the windshield and the right side.
Next, I used Ice Grey 4 to color the steering wheel and the bit below it as well as and edge around the side window.
Then, I colored the remainder with Ice Grey 7.
Lastly, I colored the bottom left part of the interior with Black as well as some reflections.
I also added some more reflections to the right side with Ice Grey 4.
Step 15: Color the Main Body of the Ferrari 488 Pista
Now it's time to start coloring the main body of the 488 Pista.
I colored the whole thing with V050 and I also colored the Ferrari shield on the side of the car with Soft Lime as I forgot to do so earlier.
Next, I colored the darker reflections with V080.
Lastly, I added some dark grey reflections to make it look more interesting. To do this I used Ice Grey 7.
Step 16: Add Details to the Ferrari 488 Pista Drawing
The Ferrari 488 Pista is now fully colored, But it lacks almost all details.
To color those details I used the colored pencils.
I used the white pencil to add highlights to most panel edges, mainly on the front, and I added tons of reflections all over the car.
I used the grey pencil to refine the wheels.
And I use the black pencil to add the darkest details, mainly panel gaps and some dark spots in the headlights.
Step 17: Add Highlights to Your Ferrari 488 Pista Drawing
To make this drawing really come to life, I used the white Posca paint marker to add a ton of white highlights all over the car like in the reference photo.
You could say I did waaaaayyy too many, but I like it.
And That's How I Made This Ferrari 488 Pista
I hope this was helpful to you!
