The Drawing Supplies I Used To Draw This Poppy Flower

I really like alcohol markers, so that's what I chose to use to create this poppy flower drawing.

I used the Ohuhu Honolulu markers in the colors G470 Pine Tree Green, BR208 Black Brown, R070 Agate, E434 Dragon Well Tea, RV240 Bronze Purple, G130 Acid Green, G270 Moss, and WG130 Warm Grey 13.

If you're on a tighter budget, these Caliart markers seem like a good and cheap alternative.

I also used some Derwent Chromaflow colored pencils: 2400 White and 2300 Black.

And I made this drawing on my favorite marker paper: Canson Illustration Manga. I cut one sheet of paper in half to make it A5-size.

How Do You Draw A Poppy Flower?

To draw a poppy flower, you first sketch the basic outline. Then, you sketch the petals and the stem. Next, you color the poppy flower with markers, building the colors up from light to dark. And to finish it off, you add a few details with colored pencils and add a few white highlights.

Step 1: Sketch The Poppy

To sketch the poppy, I first marked the top, right, bottom, and left edges of the flower.

Next, I marked the center and sketched in this cylindrical shape there.

I also sketched the first petal using the edge markings.

after that, I sketched the petal in the bottom left, overlapping a bit of the first one.

Then, I sketched the last 2 petals.

Next, I sketched the stem.

Lastly, I lightened my sketch to prevent it from showing through the marker ink.

Step 2: Color The Poppy Flower With Markers

Now that the sketch is done, we can color it.

I first colored the 4 petals with BR208 Black Brown.

Next, I colored the stem with G470 Pine Tree Green and I added some red to the petals with R070 Agate while leaving some parts light pink.

After that, I used E434 Dragon Well Tea to add some dark shadows on the petals. I tried to give the petals more texture by scribbling a bit when coloring these parts.

Next, I colored that cylindrical thing in the center using G130 Acid Green.

Then, I darkened it with G270 Moss while leaving a thin line around the top.

I also used RV240 Bronze Purple to add the dark purple to the base of the petals. To do this I used the brush nib and used short strokes starting from the center of the poppy.

Lastly, I used WG130 Warm grey 13 (cause I have no black marker...) to add the stamens in the center around that green thing.

Step 3: Add Details To The Poppy Flower With A Few Colored Pencils

To finish the poppy drawing off, I added some highlights with a white colored pencil to the lighter parts and I added some more texture by scribbling a bit on some red parts next to the light pink.

I also used the white pencil to add a highlight about halfway down the stem.

And I used the black pencil to add just a few dark ridges to the petals and to darken the top half of the stem.

And That's How You Draw A Realistic Poppy
